Understanding Place Value
What's in a Number?
The numbers 25 and 52 use the same digits, a 2 and a 5. But they aren't the same number. Why? It all comes down to where the digits are placed.
In our number system, a digit's position determines its value. This simple but powerful idea is called place value. It’s the reason we can write any number, big or small, using only ten symbols (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9).

Our system is a base-ten system. This means each place is ten times greater than the place to its right. Let’s look at the number 473. It's not just a 4, a 7, and a 3 sitting next to each other. It’s a code.
- The 3 is in the rightmost spot, the ones place. Its value is just 3.
- The 7 is in the middle, the tens place. Its value is 7 tens, or 70.
- The 4 is in the hundreds place. Its value is 4 hundreds, or 400.
So, the number 473 is really a shorthand for $400 + 70 + 3$. Each digit's value depends entirely on its column.
This pattern continues as numbers get bigger. To the left of the hundreds place is the thousands place, then ten thousands, hundred thousands, and so on. Each new spot to the left is ten times bigger than the one before it.
Reading and Writing Numbers
When we see a large number like 52831, it can look intimidating. That's why we use commas to group the digits into sets of three, starting from the right. This makes numbers much easier to read.
The number 52,831 is read as "fifty-two thousand, eight hundred thirty-one." The comma signals a new period, or family name, for that group of digits. It tells us we've moved into the thousands.

Notice the number 792,045. Even though there's a 0 in the tens place, we can't ignore it. The digit 0 is a placeholder. It holds a spot open to make sure all the other digits stay in their correct places. Without it, 792,045 would become 79,245, a completely different number.
Why It Matters
Understanding place value isn't just about reading numbers. It's the foundation for almost all arithmetic. When you add, subtract, or multiply, you line up numbers by their place value. For example, you add the ones to the ones, the tens to the tens, and so on.
When we add $25 + 13$, we are really doing two separate, smaller problems: $5 + 3$ in the ones place and $20 + 10$ in the tens place. Thinking this way helps make sense of operations with larger numbers.
A solid grasp of place value makes every other arithmetic skill easier to learn and master. It turns complicated math into a series of simple, manageable steps.
