How Your Eyes Really Read

When you read, it feels like your eyes glide smoothly across the page, right? It's a convincing illusion. In reality, your eyes move in a series of quick, jerky movements. They jump from one point to another, then pause briefly to take in information. These tiny, rapid jumps are called saccades.

During a saccade, your vision is suppressed. You're not actually reading while your eyes are in motion. The real work of reading happens during the stops, which are called fixations. A fixation is a brief pause where your eyes focus on a word or a small group of words, allowing your brain to process them. Think of it like a camera. The saccade is the quick movement to aim the camera, and the fixation is the moment the shutter opens to capture the image.

The efficiency of your reading is determined by how many fixations you make per line and how long each fixation lasts. Slower readers tend to fixate on almost every single word, which adds up. Faster readers, on the other hand, make fewer stops. They've trained their eyes to take in more words with each fixation.

The Voice in Your Head

As you read these words, do you hear a faint voice in your mind sounding them out? This is called subvocalization. It’s an incredibly common habit that most of us develop when we first learn to read by speaking words aloud. Over time, the speaking becomes silent, but the mental process remains.

Subvocalization isn't inherently bad. For dense or complex material, like a legal document or a scientific paper, mentally sounding out the words can significantly improve comprehension and retention. It forces you to slow down and engage with the material more deeply. However, for most reading, it creates a bottleneck. You can only read as fast as you can speak, which for most people is around 150 to 250 words per minute. Your brain, however, can process information much faster than that.

Your reading speed is often limited by the speed of your inner voice, not the speed of your brain's comprehension.

The key is to understand that you don't need to pronounce every word in your head to understand its meaning. You recognize a stop sign instantly without needing to say "stop" in your mind. The same principle can apply to reading. By being aware of your eye movements and the habit of subvocalization, you've taken the first step toward reading more efficiently.
