How Your Eyes Really Read

When you read, it feels like your eyes glide smoothly across the page. But that’s an illusion. In reality, your eyes move in a series of quick, jerky movements called saccades. They jump from one point to another, pausing briefly at each stop to take in information. These pauses are where the magic happens.

During each fixation, which lasts for just a fraction of a second, your eyes focus on a group of words and send a snapshot to your brain. Then, they jump to the next point. You don't read during the saccade itself; your brain actually suppresses visual input while your eyes are in motion to prevent a blurry mess.

Sometimes your eyes jump backward to re-read a word or phrase. This is called regression. It happens when your brain signals that it didn't quite catch the meaning. While occasional regressions are normal, frequent ones can significantly slow your reading pace.

The Brain's Role

Reading is much more than just seeing words. The heavy lifting is a cognitive process that happens in your brain. During each fixation, your brain decodes the letters into sounds, recognizes words, connects them to their meanings, and weaves them into the larger context of the sentence.

This all happens incredibly fast. But there's one common mental habit that sets the speed limit for many readers: subvocalization.

The internal speech or 'inner voice' used when reading, which silently pronounces words in the mind.

Subvocalization is the voice in your head that "says" the words as you read. It's a habit most of us learn as children when we're taught to read out loud. It helps with comprehension, especially for complex or important material, because it forces us to process the text more deliberately.

However, it also acts as a bottleneck. You can only read as fast as you can speak, which for most people is around 150 to 250 words per minute. Your brain can process information much faster than that.

Common Reading Habits

Becoming a more efficient reader starts with recognizing the habits that limit your speed and comprehension. By understanding the mechanics of how you read, you can start to identify these patterns in yourself.
