Introduction to LNG
What is Natural Gas, Liquefied?
Natural gas is a fossil fuel, mostly made of methane. In its usual state, it's a gas, taking up a lot of space. To make it easier to store and transport, it's chilled to an extremely low temperature.
Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is natural gas that has been cooled to -260 degrees Fahrenheit to reach a liquid state.
This cooling process is the key to LNG. The intense cold shrinks the gas dramatically. In its liquid form, natural gas is much, much more compact.
Because liquids are more compact than gases, LNG takes up only 1/600 of the space it does as a gas.
This incredible reduction in volume is what makes it possible to ship vast quantities of energy across oceans. In its pure liquid state, LNG is colorless, odorless, and non-toxic.
From Gas to Liquid
Turning natural gas into a liquid isn't as simple as just putting it in a freezer. The process, called liquefaction, happens at a large industrial facility known as an LNG plant or a "train."
First, the raw natural gas from a well must be cleaned. Impurities like water, carbon dioxide, sulfur, and helium are removed. These elements could freeze and damage equipment during the intense cooling process. After purification, the gas is almost entirely methane.
The next step is refrigeration. The purified gas is passed through a series of giant cooling loops. These cycles use refrigerants to progressively chill the natural gas until it condenses into a liquid at approximately -162°C (-260°F).
Once liquefied, the LNG is moved into massive, well-insulated storage tanks to keep it cold until it's ready to be transported.
The Global Journey of LNG
The LNG supply chain is a global network connecting gas-rich regions with energy-hungry markets. It involves several key stages, from pulling gas out of the ground to delivering it to consumers.
The final step before the gas reaches homes and businesses is regasification. At the destination, the LNG is offloaded into another storage facility.
Once LNG has arrived at its destination, regasification facilities will heat the gas until it returns to a gaseous state.
After being warmed and converted back to gas, it can be injected into the local pipeline network for distribution to power plants, factories, and residential customers.
Major Market Players
The global LNG market consists of major producers (exporters) and major consumers (importers). Countries with vast natural gas reserves lead in exports, while industrialized nations with high energy demands are the primary importers.
The top exporting countries have historically been Australia, Qatar, and the United States. They have invested heavily in the infrastructure needed to liquefy and ship their gas reserves.
On the import side, countries in Asia—like Japan, China, and South Korea—have traditionally been the largest consumers. Europe has also become a major importer, particularly as it seeks to diversify its energy sources.
It’s a textbook Econ 101 example—exporting LNG abroad where natural gas prices are much higher raises demand for U.S.-produced gas.
This global trade has created a dynamic and interconnected energy market. Events in one part of the world, like a production increase or a surge in demand, can quickly affect natural gas prices thousands of miles away.
