Getting started with macrame is simple because you don't need much. Your main material will always be some kind of cord. Besides that, you just need a few household items to measure, cut, and hold your work in place.

The most important choice you'll make is your cord. The type, material, and size of the cord will dramatically affect the final look and feel of your piece.

Macrame cords come in three main constructions, each offering a different texture.

• Single Twist: This cord is made of several strands of fiber twisted together. It's very soft and creates a beautiful, fluffy fringe when unraveled. It can be a bit tricky for beginners as it can unravel while you work.
• 3-Ply or Triple Twist: This is made of three single-twist sections twisted together, making it strong and durable. It holds its shape well and also creates a nice, wavy fringe.
• Braided: This cord has a woven or braided construction, which means it won't unravel. It's excellent for beginners and projects that need a clean, uniform look. It cannot be frayed for a fringe.

When starting out, a 3-ply or braided cotton cord between 3mm and 5mm in diameter is a great choice. It's easy to handle and forgiving of mistakes. As you get more comfortable, you can experiment with different materials and thicknesses to achieve different styles.
