Introduction to Lorwyn

A World of Endless Sun

Welcome to Lorwyn, a plane bathed in perpetual midsummer. Here, the sun never sets, creating a world of endless, idyllic daytime. The landscape is a vibrant tapestry of lush forests, winding rivers, and rolling green hills. It feels like a world lifted from the pages of a storybook, where the air is warm and life seems peaceful.

But this pastoral beauty hides a world of strict divisions and ancient rivalries. Lorwyn's society is defined by tribalism. Each of its eight major races keeps to its own, with unique cultures, traditions, and territories. While open conflict isn't constant, a deep-seated mistrust runs between the tribes. In this world, who you are is determined entirely by the race you were born into.

The Peoples of Lorwyn

Getting to know the inhabitants is key to understanding the plane. Each tribe has a distinct identity that shapes the world around them.

Elves: Unlike the wise forest-dwellers of other tales, Lorwyn's elves are vain, black-hearted aristocrats. Obsessed with beauty and perfection, they see all other races as ugly imperfections, or "eyeblights." They are ruthless hunters who see culling the population of other races as a form of social gardening. With elegant horns and hooves, their appearance is as fearsome as their reputation.

Kithkin: These small, communal humanoids live in tightly-knit farming villages called clachans. Kithkin are bound by the "thoughtweft," a magical connection that allows them to share emotions and thoughts with their community. This gives them an incredible sense of unity and coordination, especially when defending their homes from the dangers of the world.

Boggarts: The goblins of Lorwyn are mischievous and driven by pure hedonism. A boggart's life is a frantic search for new sensations—a tasty mushroom, a strange smell, a shiny rock. Their society is built on sharing. When one boggart experiences something new, it shares that memory with the warren, and the sensation quickly fades. This constant need for novelty makes them unpredictable and chaotic.

Merrow: The merfolk of Lorwyn are the masters of the plane's intricate river systems. As traders, messengers, and guides, they facilitate most of the communication and commerce that happens between the other races. They are clever and pragmatic, using their control over the waterways to their advantage.

Tribal Bonds

On Lorwyn, your tribe is everything. The deep cultural divides mean that cooperation between different races is rare. Instead, each race has developed ways of working together that are unique to their own kind. An elven hunting party moves with a singular, graceful purpose. A Kithkin militia acts as one mind through the thoughtweft. A boggart warren swarms an objective with chaotic glee.

This powerful sense of identity is the central theme of the plane. Strength comes from unity with your own people. While the world itself is bright and sunny, the lines drawn between its inhabitants create deep, unmoving shadows.
