Understanding Core Values

Your Inner Compass

Your core values are the fundamental beliefs that quietly guide your life. Think of them as your personal compass. They point you toward your “true north,” influencing your decisions, behaviors, and reactions, often without you even realizing it. They are the principles you hold as most important.

Your personal values are your core beliefs and guiding principles.

When your actions align with your values, you tend to feel a sense of satisfaction and purpose. Life just feels right. But when you act against them, you might feel uneasy, frustrated, or stuck. This feeling of misalignment is often a sign that you're straying from what truly matters to you. Understanding your values is the first step toward living a more intentional and fulfilling life.

How to Uncover Your Values

Identifying your core values isn’t about choosing what sounds good. It's about discovering what is already true for you. A great way to do this is by reflecting on your own life experiences. Your strongest emotions often point directly to your deepest values.

Think of a time you felt incredibly proud or fulfilled. What were you doing? Who were you with? What about that moment made it so positive? The answers often reveal a core value, like "Achievement," "Connection," or "Creativity."

Frustration works the same way. Consider a time you felt angry, disappointed, or resentful. What was happening? More importantly, what specific belief or principle of yours was being ignored or violated? If you were angry about someone taking credit for your work, you might value "Fairness" or "Recognition." If a last-minute change of plans upset you, perhaps you value "Stability" or "Reliability."

Finding Your Words

Once you've reflected on some past experiences, it can be helpful to put names to your values. Looking at a list can help you pinpoint the exact concepts that resonate with you. Don't worry about picking the "right" ones. Just notice which words feel most true to your experiences.

Scan the list and write down every word that stands out. Then, try to group similar ideas and narrow your list down to the 5-10 values that feel most essential to who you are. These are your core values. They are the foundation upon which you can start building a more aligned life.
