Lithuanian Alphabet
The Lithuanian Alphabet
The Lithuanian alphabet is your first step into the language. It uses the Latin script, just like English, but contains 32 letters. While many will look familiar, there are some unique characters with specific sounds you'll need to learn.
Lithuanian has a relatively phonetic spelling system, which means words are generally pronounced as they are written.
This phonetic nature is a huge advantage. Unlike English, where a letter can have multiple sounds (think of the 'a' in 'cat,' 'car,' and 'call'), Lithuanian letters are consistent. Once you learn the sound for each letter, you can confidently pronounce almost any word you see. The letters Q, W, and X are not used in native Lithuanian words, but you might see them in foreign names or terms.
The Vowels
Lithuanian has 12 vowels. Some are short, and some are long. The length of a vowel sound can change the meaning of a word, so it's an important distinction.
| Letter | Pronunciation (similar to English) |
|---|---|
| A, a | Short, like the 'a' in above |
| Ą, ą | Long, like the 'a' in father |
| E, e | Short, like the 'e' in met |
| Ę, ę | Long, like the 'ai' in fair |
| Ė, ė | Long, like the 'ay' in say |
| I, i | Short, like the 'i' in sit |
| Į, į | Long, like the 'ee' in see |
| Y, y | Long, also like the 'ee' in see |
| O, o | Mostly long, like the 'o' in story. Can be short in foreign words. |
| U, u | Short, like the 'oo' in book |
| Ų, ų | Long, like the 'oo' in moon |
| Ū, ū | Long, also like the 'oo' in moon |
The little tails on Ą, Ę, Į, and Ų are called nosinė (nasal). Historically, these vowels were nasalized, but in modern standard Lithuanian, they simply indicate a long vowel sound. Think of them as the long versions of A, E, I, and U.
The Consonants
Most consonants in Lithuanian sound very similar to their English counterparts. However, there are a few special characters and some letters that have a single, specific sound, unlike in English.
| Letter | Pronunciation (similar to English) |
|---|---|
| C, c | Like 'ts' in cats |
| Č, č | Like 'ch' in church |
| G, g | Always a hard 'g', as in goat. Never soft like in 'giraffe'. |
| J, j | Like 'y' in yes |
| R, r | A rolled or trilled R, similar to Spanish. |
| Š, š | Like 'sh' in shoe |
| Ž, ž | Like the 's' in measure or the 'zh' sound. |
The marks on Č, Š, and Ž are called a varnelė or caron. They change the sound of the base letter. The remaining consonants—B, D, F, H, K, L, M, N, P, S, T, V, Z—will be very familiar to English speakers.
How many letters are in the modern Lithuanian alphabet?
True or False: In Lithuanian, a single letter can represent many different sounds, similar to the letter 'a' in English.
Getting comfortable with these letters and their sounds is the most important foundation for learning Lithuanian. Practice saying them out loud.
