Profile Photo and Banner

Your Visual Handshake

Before anyone reads a word of your profile, they see your picture and banner. This combination is your digital first impression, a quick visual cue that tells people you’re a professional who pays attention to detail. A strong photo and a relevant banner can make the difference between a quick glance and a deep dive into your experience.

The Perfect Profile Photo

Your profile photo is not the place for a vacation snapshot or a picture of your pet. It’s a professional headshot that should build trust and recognition. The goal is to look like yourself, on your best day at work.

Think of it this way: if a potential employer met you for coffee, would they recognize you from your photo? It should be a recent, clear image of your face. You don't need to hire a professional photographer, but you should put some thought into it.

Guidelines for a great headshot: • Head and Shoulders: Crop the photo to focus on your face. • Smile: A warm, genuine smile is inviting and confident. • Look at the Camera: Direct eye contact builds trust. • Simple Background: A neutral, uncluttered background keeps the focus on you. • Dress Professionally: Wear what you would for a job interview in your field.

People are more likely to respond to a friendly face than just text on a screen, so be sure your LinkedIn profile includes a clear, professional photo – one where you’re smiling and the only person in the frame (no group shots or pets).

Your Banner Image

The banner image, also called the background photo, is the wide picture that sits behind your profile photo. It’s a fantastic opportunity to add context and personality to your profile. While your headshot shows who you are, the banner can hint at what you do or what you care about professionally.

Don't leave this space empty. The default gray banner looks unfinished. Instead, choose an image that reflects your industry, skills, or professional brand. A graphic designer might showcase a piece of their work, a writer could use an image of a clean workspace, and an architect could feature a blueprint or building.

If you're unsure what to use, a high-quality abstract image with your brand colors or a photo of your city's skyline can work well. The key is to choose something that is clean, professional, and visually appealing.

How to Upload

Updating your photo and banner is straightforward.

  1. Navigate to your LinkedIn profile page.
  2. To change your profile photo, click on the existing photo. A pop-up will appear allowing you to upload, adjust, or edit your new picture.
  3. To change your banner, click the camera icon in the top-right corner of the banner area. You can then upload a new image and reposition it as needed.

Make sure your images are high resolution to avoid a blurry or pixelated look. LinkedIn will provide recommended dimensions when you go to upload.
