Meta Advertising Basics

The World of Meta Ads

When we talk about advertising on Facebook or Instagram, we're really talking about Meta ads. Meta is the parent company that owns both platforms, along with others like WhatsApp. This means you use one central system, the Meta Ads Manager, to create and run ads across this massive social network.

Businesses flock to these platforms for a simple reason: that's where the people are. With billions of users scrolling through feeds and stories every day, Meta offers a direct line to potential customers. But before you can reach them, you need to understand how ads are structured.

How Ads are Organized

Every Meta ad fits into a three-level structure. Think of it like a filing cabinet.

  1. Campaign: This is the whole cabinet. It represents your single, overarching advertising goal.
  2. Ad Set: These are the drawers inside the cabinet. Each drawer holds a group of ads with a specific delivery plan.
  3. Ad: These are the individual files in each drawer. They are the actual creative content your audience sees.

At the Campaign level, you choose your main objective. What is the one thing you want to achieve? Common goals include building brand awareness, driving traffic to your website, or making sales.

In the Ad Set level, you define how your ads will be delivered. This is where you’d set details about who sees your ads and where they appear, like in Instagram Stories or the Facebook Feed. You can have multiple ad sets within a single campaign.

Finally, at the Ad level, you create the visuals and text that people interact with. This is your chance to be creative. Each ad set can contain several different ads, allowing you to test which images, videos, or headlines work best.

What Your Ads Can Look Like

Meta offers a variety of ad formats to help you tell your story. The one you choose will depend on your product, your audience, and your campaign goal.

FormatDescriptionBest For
Image AdA single, high-quality photo or graphic.Simple, powerful messages and showcasing a single product.
Video AdA video with sound and motion.Demonstrating a product in action or telling a compelling story.
Carousel AdA series of up to 10 scrollable images or videos.Highlighting multiple products, features, or steps in a process.
Collection AdA primary image or video with smaller product images below.Creating an instant, mobile-friendly storefront experience.

Each format has its strengths. Image ads are quick to digest, while video ads can capture attention more effectively. Carousels encourage interaction, and collection ads make it easy for people to browse and buy directly from their feed.

Facebook ads consist of a simple 25-character headline and a 90-character description, plus a thumbnail photograph.

Playing by the Rules

Meta has strict Advertising Policies to ensure a safe and positive experience for users. Before an ad goes live, it's reviewed to make sure it complies with these rules. Violating them can get your ad rejected or even your entire ad account disabled.

Common reasons for ad rejection include making misleading claims, using prohibited content like weapons or tobacco, and violating copyrights.

Some industries, like housing, employment, and credit, have special restrictions to prevent discrimination. It's crucial to read the full policies, but here are a few key takeaways:

  • Be truthful. Don't make exaggerated promises or use deceptive images.
  • Be respectful. Avoid content that is discriminatory, shocking, or overly sexual.
  • Respect privacy. Don't ask for sensitive information in your ads.

Getting familiar with the campaign structure, available formats, and advertising rules is the first step toward building effective ads. It provides the foundation for all the strategic decisions that come next.
