What Is Kawasaki Disease?
Kawasaki disease is an illness that causes inflammation in the walls of blood vessels throughout the body. It's a rare condition that almost always affects young children, typically those under the age of five. The inflammation can weaken the walls of arteries, particularly the coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart.

The disease was first described in Japan in the 1960s by a pediatrician named Dr. Tomisaku Kawasaki. He noticed a group of children with a distinct and puzzling set of symptoms, including a high fever, rash, and red eyes, that didn't fit any known illness. He published his findings in 1967, and the condition was eventually named after him. Initially thought to be a benign illness, doctors later discovered its potential to cause serious heart complications.
Why It Matters
While most children who receive treatment recover fully from Kawasaki disease without long-term issues, its significance lies in the potential for heart damage. In fact, it's the leading cause of acquired heart disease in children in developed countries. The inflammation can lead to weakened and bulging artery walls, known as aneurysms, in the coronary arteries.
Without treatment, about 25% of children with Kawasaki disease develop coronary artery problems. With prompt treatment, that number drops to less than 5%.
