Starting with the End in Mind

Designing a course is like building a house. You wouldn't start by nailing boards together randomly; you'd begin with a blueprint. In education, this blueprint is built on a simple but powerful principle: alignment. Everything in your course, from what you teach to how you test, should connect directly to a clear set of learning goals.

Alignment means that the learning objectives (what you want students to learn), the assessments (how you measure their learning), and the instructional activities (what students do to learn) all support one another.

When these three components are aligned, students have a clear path. They understand what they're supposed to learn, they engage in activities designed to help them learn it, and they can demonstrate their knowledge in a meaningful way. Without alignment, courses can feel disjointed and confusing, leaving students unsure of the purpose behind their assignments.

The Backward Design Approach

The most common and effective way to achieve alignment is through backward design. As the name suggests, it involves working backward from your desired endpoint.

Backward Design begins with the end in mind.

Instead of starting with a favorite textbook or a fun activity, you begin by asking, "What should my students be able to know, understand, and do by the end of this course?" This process typically unfolds in three stages.

Stage 1: Identify Desired Results. This is where you define your learning objectives. A strong objective is specific, measurable, and focuses on what the student will do. Instead of a vague goal like "understand the solar system," a better objective would be "describe the key characteristics of each planet in the solar system."

Stage 2: Determine Acceptable Evidence. Once you know your destination, you need to decide how you'll know students have arrived. This is your assessment. It's the evidence that proves a student has met the objective. This could be anything from a project or a presentation to a class discussion—not just a final exam.

Stage 3: Plan Learning Experiences and Instruction. Only after you've defined the goals and the evidence do you plan the day-to-day activities. What readings, lectures, labs, or discussions will best prepare students for the assessment and help them achieve the learning objectives? Every activity should have a clear purpose tied to the end goal.

Mapping the Journey

If backward design is the framework for a single lesson or unit, curriculum mapping is the master blueprint for the entire course. A curriculum map is a visual tool, often a table or chart, that lays out all the course components over time.

It helps you see the big picture at a glance. By mapping out your objectives, content, and assessments week by week, you can ensure a logical flow. You can check that concepts build on each other, that there are no major gaps in content, and that you aren't accidentally repeating material. It’s a quality-control check for your course.
