Turkish Alphabet

The Turkish Alphabet

The modern Turkish alphabet is your first step to speaking the language. It's based on the Latin script, just like English, but with a few adjustments to fit the sounds of Turkish. It has 29 letters in total.

The best part? Turkish is almost completely phonetic. That means each letter has only one sound. Once you learn the alphabet, you can pronounce almost any word you see.

Unique Sounds and Letters

Most letters in the Turkish alphabet sound just like they do in English. The letters Q, W, and X are not used in native Turkish words. The real learning curve comes from six special letters you won't find in English: ç, ğ, ı, ö, ş, and ü.

Let’s break them down.

Ç (ç) sounds like 'ch' in 'church'. Think of the Turkish word for tea, çay.

Ş (ş) sounds like 'sh' in 'shoe'. For example, şapka means 'hat'.

Ö (ö) is pronounced like the 'u' in the English word 'burn'. To make this sound, shape your lips as if you're saying 'o', but try to say 'e' instead.

Ü (ü) is another vowel with no direct English equivalent. Form your lips to say 'oo' (as in 'cool') but say the sound 'ee' (as in 'see'). It's similar to the 'u' in 'cute'.

The Soft G and the Dotless I

Two letters deserve special attention: ğ and ı.

Ğ (ğ) is called the yumuşak ge (soft g). It's a very subtle letter and is never at the beginning of a word. Its main job is to lengthen the vowel that comes before it. For example, in the word dağ (mountain), you just draw out the 'a' sound a little longer. You don't pronounce the 'ğ' at all. Between two vowels, it can sometimes sound like a faint 'y'.

I (ı) vs. İ (i). This is a crucial distinction. These are two completely separate vowels.

  • İ/i (with a dot) is pronounced like the 'ee' in 'see' or 'meet'.
  • I/ı (without a dot) has a sound similar to the 'u' in 'stadium' or the final 'a' in 'sofa'.

It's very important to get these right. The uppercase for i is İ and the uppercase for ı is I. Forgetting or adding a dot can completely change a word's meaning.

For example, ilık means 'warm', but ılık is not a word. The correct spelling uses one dotless 'ı' and one dotted 'i'.
