What Are First Principles?
Many ideas are built on top of other ideas. But if you dig down to the very bottom, you'll eventually hit a foundational truth, one that can't be broken down any further. This is a fundamental principle, or a first principle.
A first principle is a basic, foundational assumption—one that cannot be deduced or broken down any further.
Think of it like the alphabet. The letters A, B, C, and so on are the first principles of written English. From these 26 basic units, we build words, then sentences, paragraphs, and entire books. You can't break the letter 'A' down into anything simpler. It's a starting point.
Reasoning from first principles means you build your understanding from these core truths, piece by piece. The opposite is reasoning by analogy, which is like copying someone else's work. It might get you a similar result, but you won't understand why it works. Understanding the fundamentals gives you the power to create something entirely new.
Why They Matter
Grasping fundamental principles is the difference between memorizing a recipe and understanding the science of cooking. A person who only memorizes recipes can make a few specific dishes. But a chef who understands the first principles of flavor, heat, and chemistry can create entirely new recipes and fix a dish when something goes wrong.
This applies to any field. By understanding the core rules, you can solve complex problems, innovate, and see the world more clearly. You're no longer just following instructions; you're operating from a deep understanding of how things actually work.
Principles Across Fields
Every field of knowledge rests on its own set of fundamental principles. They might be called laws, axioms, or postulates, but the idea is the same. They are the starting assumptions from which everything else is built.
