Introduction to Electricity

The Spark of Charge

At the heart of electricity is something called electric charge. Think of it as a fundamental property of matter, like mass. Protons have a positive (+) charge, and electrons have a negative (-) charge. Just like with magnets, opposites attract and likes repel. A proton and an electron will pull toward each other, while two electrons will push each other away.

Every charged particle creates an electric field around it. This field is an invisible zone of influence. When another charge enters this field, it feels a push or a pull. The strength of this force depends on how much charge there is and how far apart the particles are.

The Big Three

To understand how we use electricity, we need to know three key concepts: voltage, current, and resistance. A great way to visualize this is to think of electricity flowing through a wire like water flowing through a hose.

Voltage (V) is the pressure that pushes the electric charges along. It's the 'oomph' behind the flow. A high-voltage source is like a high-pressure water pump; it can push a lot of charge with a lot of force. Voltage is measured in volts (V).

Current (I) is the actual flow of electric charge. It measures how many electrons pass a single point in a certain amount of time. In our analogy, this is the amount of water flowing through the hose. Current is measured in amperes (A), or amps for short.

Resistance (R) is the opposition to the flow of current. It's like a kink in the hose that restricts the water. Different materials have different levels of resistance. Copper wires have very low resistance, which is why we use them for wiring. Resistance is measured in ohms (Ω\Omega).
