What is Pharmacovigilance?
Clinical trials are essential for testing new medicines, but they can't tell us everything. They involve a limited number of people under controlled conditions. The real test begins when a drug is approved and used by millions in the real world, with all its complexities.
This is where pharmacovigilance comes in. It's the ongoing process of monitoring the safety of medicines after they have been licensed for use. Think of it as a continuous safety check to protect public health.

A History Shaped by Tragedy
Modern pharmacovigilance wasn't born in a laboratory. It was forged in the aftermath of a public health crisis. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, a drug called thalidomide was marketed as a safe sedative and a remedy for morning sickness.
Tragically, the drug interfered with fetal development. Thousands of babies were born with severe birth defects, most notably phocomelia, a condition where limbs are malformed or missing entirely. The thalidomide disaster was a global wake-up call. It revealed a massive gap in drug regulation: no system was in place to monitor the safety of medicines after they were on the market.
This event directly prompted many countries to establish formal systems for collecting reports of adverse drug reactions, laying the groundwork for the international pharmacovigilance networks we have today.
