The three main building blocks are root words, prefixes, and suffixes.
The Core Meaning
The root word is the foundation of a medical term. It gives you the basic meaning, usually referring to a body part, organ, or system. The root is the core piece of the puzzle.
For example, the root cardi refers to the heart. Anytime you see it in a medical term, you know the heart is involved.

Adding Prefixes and Suffixes

By breaking the word down, you can figure out its meaning: inflammation of the liver. Let's try another one: nephrectomy. You can see the root nephr (kidney) and the suffix -ectomy (surgical removal). The term means the surgical removal of a kidney.
This system allows for incredible precision. For example, gastritis is inflammation of the stomach, while gastroenteritis combines two roots, gastr (stomach) and enter (intestines), with -itis to mean inflammation of the stomach and intestines.
Common Shorthand
In clinical documentation, you'll find many abbreviations. They save time, but you need to know what they mean to code accurately. Some abbreviations can have multiple meanings, so context is always key. However, some are very common and standardized.
