The Science of Language
Linguistics is the scientific study of language. It’s not about learning many languages or being a grammar expert who corrects people at dinner parties. Instead, linguists are like detectives. They investigate how language works, from the smallest sounds and gestures to the complex ways we build sentences and create meaning in conversations.
This field explores big questions. What is language, really? What do all languages have in common, and how do they differ? How do children learn to speak so quickly? How does language change over time? By studying language, we learn about the human mind itself.

What Makes Human Language Special?
Animals communicate, but human language is unique. A few key properties set it apart from a dog’s bark or a bee’s waggle dance.

Describing vs. Prescribing
In school, you likely learned a set of grammar rules, such as "Don't split infinitives" or "Don't end a sentence with a preposition." This approach is called prescriptivism. It prescribes rules for how language should be used, often based on tradition or logic.
Linguists, however, take a different approach: descriptivism. They aim to describe language as it is actually used by its speakers, without judgment. A descriptive linguist is like a biologist studying a rainforest. They wouldn't tell a monkey it's climbing a tree the "wrong" way. They would observe, record, and analyze its behavior to understand it.
So, when a linguist hears someone say, "I ain't got no money," they don't correct them. Instead, they might ask questions: Who uses this structure? In what situations? What social meaning does it carry? For a descriptivist, if native speakers use a certain form, it's a valid part of their language.

By gathering empirical evidence, linguists can form and test hypotheses about the intricate system that underlies our ability to communicate.
