What Is a Game?
When you hear the word “game,” you probably think of chess, sports, or video games. But in game theory, a “game” is any situation where the outcome of your choices depends on the choices of others. It’s about strategic interdependence.

Think about something as simple as choosing a restaurant with a friend. If you both want to eat at the same place, the decision is easy. But what if you want Italian and your friend wants Thai? Your choice affects your friend’s dinner, and their choice affects yours. That’s interdependence. Game theory provides a framework to analyze these situations, from simple daily decisions to complex global politics.
The Rules of the Game
To analyze a strategic situation, or “game,” we need to understand its basic components. Every game has three key elements: players, strategies, and payoffs.

Let's break these down.
- Players are the rational actors making decisions. A player can be an individual, a company, a country, or even an animal competing for resources.
- A strategy is a complete plan of action. It specifies what a player will do in every possible situation throughout the game. For the coffee shop, a simple strategy is to lower its price. A more complex one might be: “Lower my price only if my competitor lowers theirs first.”
- Payoffs are what players get at the end of the game. They represent the motivations of the players and can be measured in money, utility, or even survival.
Two Styles of Play
Games generally fall into two broad categories based on how the players can interact: cooperative and non-cooperative.
Cooperative Game

In cooperative games, communication and contracts are key. Think of business partners negotiating a contract. They can discuss terms, make binding promises, and agree on how to divide the profits from their joint venture. The main challenge is finding an agreement that is fair and stable for everyone in the group.
Non-Cooperative Game

A game where players cannot form binding agreements and must act in their own self-interest.
In non-cooperative games, players are independent actors. Even if they communicate, any promises they make are not enforceable. Each player's goal is to predict what others will do and make the best choice for themselves. The coffee shops in our price war example are in a non-cooperative game. They can't sign a binding contract to keep prices high, so each must decide on its pricing strategy alone.
Beyond the Board Game
The principles of game theory apply to a surprisingly wide range of fields because strategic interactions are a fundamental part of life.
Game theory helps us understand everything from why companies advertise to how animals evolve.
In economics, game theory is used to analyze market competition, auctions, and bargaining. It helps explain the behavior of firms in an oligopoly, where a few companies dominate the market.
In political science, it models interactions between political candidates, the behavior of voters, and conflicts between nations. It provides insights into arms races, trade negotiations, and the formation of political coalitions.
Even biology uses game theory. Evolutionary game theory studies how the strategies of different species evolve over time. It can explain behaviors like cooperation among animals, territorial disputes, and predator-prey dynamics.
By understanding these core concepts—players, strategies, payoffs, and the type of game being played—you have the foundation for thinking strategically about the world.
