What Is Cybersecurity?

The Core Principles

To understand how to protect information, we first need to agree on what “protected” actually means. In cybersecurity, protection is built on three core principles, often called the CIA Triad.

At its core, cybersecurity aims to protect the Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability of information, a concept often referred to as the CIA Triad.

Each principle answers a fundamental question about our data:

  • Confidentiality: Is it secret?
  • Integrity: Can it be trusted?
  • Availability: Is it ready when I need it?

These three ideas form a constant balancing act. Sometimes, making something more confidential might make it less available. Good cybersecurity finds the right mix for the situation.

Speaking the Language

Like any specialized field, cybersecurity has its own vocabulary. Understanding these basic terms is the first step to understanding the challenges and solutions in this space.

Asset

Anything that has value to an individual or organization.

Assets are what we are trying to protect. This could be physical hardware, like a server, or digital information, like a trade secret or a personal photo album.

Vulnerability

A weakness or flaw in a system that can be exploited to cause harm.

Think of a vulnerability as an unlocked door on a house. It's not a problem on its own, but it creates an opportunity for something bad to happen.

Threat

noun

Any potential danger that can exploit a vulnerability.

A threat is the person or event that might walk through that unlocked door. Threats can be intentional, like a cybercriminal, or accidental, like a natural disaster that knocks a system offline.

Risk

noun

The potential for loss or damage when a threat exploits a vulnerability.

Risk brings all these concepts together. It's the likelihood that a specific threat will exploit a particular vulnerability and the impact that would have on your assets. Managing risk is at the heart of what cybersecurity professionals do every day.
