The chessboard is an 8x8 grid of 64 squares, alternating between light and dark colors. Before you can play, you need to orient the board correctly. It's simple, but essential.

To talk about squares, we use a coordinate system. The vertical columns are called files, labeled 'a' through 'h'. The horizontal rows are called ranks, numbered 1 through 8.

This creates a unique name for every square. For example, the light square in the bottom-left corner is 'a1'. White's pieces start on ranks 1 and 2, while Black's pieces start on ranks 7 and 8.

Each player starts with 16 pieces. Let's place them on the board, starting with the back rank (rank 1 for White, rank 8 for Black).

1. Rooks go in the corners. For White, that's a1 and h1. For Black, it's a8 and h8.
2. Knights stand next to the rooks. White's knights go on b1 and g1; Black's on b8 and g8.
3. Bishops go next to the knights. White's are on c1 and f1; Black's on c8 and f8.

That leaves two squares in the back rank for the most important pieces: the king and queen.

The king takes the last remaining square on the back rank, right next to his queen. White's king starts on e1, and Black's on e8.

Finally, the eight pawns form a protective wall in front of the other pieces. Place them on the second rank (rank 2 for White, rank 7 for Black).

With all the pieces in place, your board is set up and ready for a game.
