What Is Artificial Intelligence?
Artificial intelligence, or AI, is about building machines that can think, learn, and solve problems like humans do. It's a broad field in computer science focused on creating systems that can perform tasks that normally require our own intelligence.
At its core, Artificial Intelligence refers to the simulation of human intelligence in machines programmed to think, learn, and problem-solve.
Think about how you recognize a friend's face in a photo, understand what they're saying, or decide the best route to take to a new cafe. AI systems are designed to do similar things: recognize patterns, understand language, and make decisions. They learn from data, adapt to new information, and perform tasks without being explicitly programmed for every single step.
The Two Main Types of AI
Not all AI is the same. Right now, we can group AI into two main categories: Narrow AI and General AI. Understanding the difference is key to understanding what AI can and can't do today.
Narrow AI

Also known as Weak AI, this is the only type of AI we have successfully built so far. It’s incredibly powerful for the specific job it's designed for. Think of the AI that recommends movies on streaming services, the voice assistant on your phone, or the software that detects credit card fraud. These systems are experts in their narrow domains but can't operate outside of them. The movie recommendation AI can't help you with your taxes, and the fraud detection system can't play chess.
General AI

AI with the ability to understand, learn, and apply knowledge across a wide range of tasks at a human level.
Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), or Strong AI, is the kind of AI you often see in science fiction. It would have the flexible, adaptable intelligence of a human being. An AGI could learn to do almost any intellectual task a person can. It could reason, plan, solve complex problems, and think abstractly. Building AGI is a major goal for many researchers, but it remains a theoretical concept for now.
AI in Everyday Life
Even though we're still in the era of Narrow AI, its applications are everywhere. You likely use AI many times a day without even realizing it. These tools are designed to make our lives easier, more efficient, and more connected.
