What Is Artificial Intelligence?

A Quick Trip Through Time
The idea of intelligent machines has been around for centuries, but the official starting point for AI as a field was a workshop at Dartmouth College in the summer of 1956. A group of scientists gathered to explore the idea that "every aspect of learning or any other feature of intelligence can in principle be so precisely described that a machine can be made to simulate it." It was here that the term "artificial intelligence" was first used.

The next leap forward came with the rise of deep learning, a subfield of machine learning inspired by the structure of the human brain. Thanks to massive datasets and more powerful computers, deep learning models achieved incredible results in areas like image and speech recognition.
Another landmark event was in 2016, when Google DeepMind's AlphaGo beat Lee Sedol, one of the world's best Go players. Many thought this was a decade away, as Go is far more intuitive and complex than chess. AlphaGo's victory demonstrated a new level of machine creativity and intuition.
