What Is Artificial Intelligence?

At its core, artificial intelligence is the science of making machines that can think like humans. It's a broad field in computer science focused on building smart machines capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence.

Think of it this way: We teach a child by showing them examples. We show them a cat and say "cat." After seeing a few different cats, the child learns to recognize any cat. AI works in a similar way, but on a massive scale, learning from vast amounts of data.

Early excitement was followed by periods of disillusionment known as "AI winters." Funding dried up when the promised results didn't materialize quickly enough. But progress continued, and with the rise of powerful computers and the availability of massive datasets in the 21st century, AI experienced a renaissance.

What's the Goal?

Problem-Solving: This objective involves using the learned rules and reasoned conclusions to find the best solution to a specific problem. This could be anything from finding the quickest route on a map to diagnosing a medical condition.

Together, these objectives form a cycle: an AI learns from data, reasons about what it has learned, and then applies that knowledge to solve problems.
