What Is Artificial Intelligence?
Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is about creating machines that can think and learn. The goal is to build systems that can perform tasks that typically require human intelligence, like recognizing speech, making decisions, or translating languages. It's not about creating robots that look like people, but about building software that can process information in an intelligent way.
Artificial intelligence (AI) is a branch of computer science and engineering that focuses on building machines that are capable of learning, solving problems, making decisions, and all other functions that are performed traditionally by the human intellect.
The idea of intelligent machines isn't new. Philosophers have wondered about it for centuries. But the actual field of AI officially began in the mid-20th century. Since then, its journey has been a series of breakthroughs, setbacks, and incredible growth.
Two Main Types of AI
When people talk about AI, they are usually referring to one of two broad categories. The distinction between them is crucial for understanding what AI can and can't do today.

Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI), often called Weak AI, is designed to handle one specific task. Your phone's voice assistant, the recommendation engine on a streaming service, and software that detects fraud are all examples of Narrow AI. They are incredibly powerful and efficient at what they do, but they can't operate outside their programmed functions. A chess-playing AI can't write a poem, and a spam filter can't drive a car.
Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), or Strong AI, is the kind of AI you see in science fiction. This is a machine with the ability to understand, learn, and apply knowledge across a wide range of tasks at a human level. AGI would be able to reason, plan, and think creatively. Right now, AGI is purely hypothetical. We haven't created it yet.
How AI Systems 'Think'
Beyond the Narrow versus General distinction, AI systems can also be classified based on their capabilities and level of consciousness. This framework helps us understand their complexity and potential.
1. Reactive Machines: This is the most basic type of AI. These systems react to the world as they see it, but they can't store memories or use past experiences to inform future decisions. A famous example is IBM's Deep Blue, the chess program that defeated Garry Kasparov in the 1990s. It could identify the pieces on the board and make predictions, but it had no memory of what happened in previous moves.
2. Limited Memory: This AI can look into the past. Self-driving cars are a great example. They observe the speed and direction of other cars, which they can't do in just one moment. They must identify specific objects and monitor them over time. This information is added to their pre-programmed understanding of the world, but the memory is short-lived.
3. Theory of Mind: This is where AI starts to get more advanced, and it's currently a work in progress. A "theory of mind" is the psychological term for understanding that others have their own beliefs, desires, and intentions that impact their decisions. For AI, this means being able to understand and interact with human emotions and thoughts.
4. Self-Aware AI: The final step in AI's evolution is a system that has a sense of self. This type of AI would have consciousness, be aware of its own state, and understand the feelings of others. Like AGI, self-aware AI is purely theoretical and a subject of much debate.
The significance of AI in modern society is hard to overstate. It's not just a tool for big tech companies; it's woven into the fabric of our daily lives. From the way we shop and get medical advice to how we manage our finances and stay entertained, AI is working behind the scenes.
