You know that indicators help you analyze charts, but relying on just one is like trying to navigate with only a compass. It gives you direction, but you're missing the map. Professional-grade analysis comes from combining multiple indicators to see a more complete picture. This is called confluence—when different tools point to the same conclusion, giving you a much stronger signal.
We'll focus on three powerful indicators that measure different aspects of market behaviour: the Relative Strength Index (RSI) for momentum, the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) for trend changes, and Bollinger Bands for volatility. The goal isn't just to know what they are, but how to make them work together.
Momentum and Divergence with RSI
The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is a momentum oscillator. It doesn't track price directly; instead, it measures the speed and magnitude of recent price changes on a scale from 0 to 100. Think of it as the speedometer for a stock or crypto asset.
Traditionally, a reading above 70 suggests an asset is "overbought" and may be due for a pullback, while a reading below 30 suggests it's "oversold" and could be ready to bounce. However, these are not automatic buy or sell signals. In a strong uptrend, an asset can stay overbought for a long time. The real power of RSI comes from spotting contradictions.

This contradiction is called RSI divergence and it's one of the strongest signals an indicator can provide. Bearish divergence occurs when the price chart prints a new high, but the RSI fails to do so, making a lower high instead. This suggests momentum is fading and the uptrend could be losing steam.
Conversely, bullish divergence happens when the price makes a new low, but the RSI forms a higher low. This hints that selling pressure is weakening and a price reversal to the upside might be coming.
Catching the Turn with MACD
The Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) indicator is designed to reveal changes in the strength, direction, momentum, and duration of a trend. It consists of three main components you'll see on a chart: the MACD line, the signal line, and the histogram.
- The MACD Line is the difference between two exponential moving averages (typically the 12-day and 26-day). It reacts fairly quickly to price changes.
- The Signal Line is an exponential moving average (typically 9-day) of the MACD line itself. It's smoother and slower.
- The Histogram represents the distance between the MACD line and the Signal line. When the histogram is large, momentum is strong. When it shrinks, momentum is fading.
The most common MACD signal is the crossover. A bullish crossover occurs when the faster MACD line crosses above the slower Signal line, suggesting upward momentum is building. A bearish crossover happens when the MACD line crosses below the Signal line, indicating momentum is shifting downwards.
Riding Volatility with Bollinger Bands
Bollinger Bands are all about volatility. They consist of a simple moving average (the middle band) and two outer bands that represent two standard deviations above and below the middle band.
- When the bands are wide apart, volatility is high.
- When the bands contract and get narrow, volatility is low.
Low volatility often precedes high volatility. A period where the bands tighten is known as a "squeeze." This signals that a significant price move could be on the horizon, though it doesn't predict the direction. Traders watch for a "breakout," where the price moves decisively outside of the squeezed bands, often accompanied by a surge in volume, to initiate a trade.
The outer bands can also act as dynamic levels of support and resistance. However, just because the price touches an outer band doesn't mean it will reverse. During a strong trend, the price can "walk the band," consistently hitting the upper or lower band without pulling back.
Putting it all together is where the magic happens. A single indicator gives you a clue. Multiple indicators in agreement give you a strategy.
Let's imagine a scenario. You notice the Bollinger Bands on a stock chart are squeezing tight, signaling low volatility and a potential breakout. You wait. The price breaks above the upper band, but you want more confirmation.
You look at your MACD. You see that the MACD line has just crossed above its signal line—a bullish crossover. That's two confirming signals.
Finally, you check the RSI. It's at 60 and rising, showing healthy upward momentum but not yet in the "overbought" territory. This confluence of signals (a Bollinger Band breakout, a MACD crossover, and a strong RSI) provides a much higher-probability entry point than any single signal could.
This strategy also helps you adapt. In highly volatile markets like cryptocurrency, the RSI can give frequent false signals, staying "overbought" for days during a bull run. A trader who only watched the RSI might sell too early. But if you wait for the MACD to show a bearish crossover and for the price to fall back inside the Bollinger Bands, you can filter out the noise and avoid a premature exit. The principles are the same, but the sensitivity of your indicators must be adjusted to the asset you're trading.
