From Shapes to Solids
You've mastered drawing flat shapes. Now, let's give them weight. The real world is made of solid forms, not just outlines. To draw realistically, you have to think like a sculptor, building complex subjects from simple, three-dimensional blocks. This process is often called constructive drawing.
Artists often break complex shapes into simpler geometric forms—cubes, spheres, cylinders, and pyramids—to understand and render objects from various angles.
The goal is to stop seeing a person or a car and instead see an assembly of boxes, cylinders, and spheres. This technique, which we'll call Mannequinization, is the bridge between a flat sketch and a drawing that feels like it has mass and occupies real space. It's the structural blueprint you create before adding any details like muscle or texture.

Building with Boxes
The box, or cuboid, is the most important primitive because it clearly defines planes: a top, a bottom, and four sides. This makes it the perfect starting point for understanding orientation in space. Think of the torso or pelvis of a figure. These are not flat squares; they are blocks that can twist, turn, and tilt.
When drawing a box, always think about the lines you can't see. Visualizing these hidden edges helps you understand its volume and how it sits in perspective. Is the box tilted away from you? Then the back plane will appear smaller. Is it angled to the left? The right side plane will be more visible. This is the essence of box modeling as a drawing technique.
Curves and Connections
While boxes are great for rigid structures, the organic world is full of curves. This is where cylinders and spheres come in. Cylinders are perfect for limbs, necks, and fingers. Spheres are ideal for heads, joints like the shoulder, and eyeballs. The key is to see how these forms connect and overlap.
Imagine an arm. It’s not one long tube. It's two main cylinders (the upper arm and forearm) connected by a spherical joint (the elbow). When one form passes in front of another, it establishes depth. The cylinder for the bicep partially hides the cylinder for the forearm when the arm is bent. This overlapping is a powerful, simple tool to make your drawing pop off the page.
Draw through your forms. Don't stop a line where one shape meets another; lightly sketch the entire primitive as if it were transparent. This ensures the parts connect logically.
Finally, use contour lines to describe the surface of these forms. A straight line across a cylinder looks flat. But a curved line that wraps around it instantly communicates its roundness. These are called cross-contour lines. They act like lines of latitude on a globe, turning your simple primitives into convincing volumes.
