Refining Motion Curves

Beyond Basic Keyframes

You already know how to set keyframes to change an object's position, scale, or opacity over time. That's the foundation. But by default, this movement is linear and robotic. The change happens at a constant rate, which rarely occurs in the real world. To create motion that feels natural and intentional, you need to go beyond placing keyframes and start shaping the curves between them. This is the domain of the Graph Editor in After Effects.

The Graph Editor is where you control the interpolation between keyframes, dictating the exact velocity and value changes from one point in time to another. It offers two powerful views of your animation: the Value Graph and the Speed Graph. Mastering both is the bridge from mechanical movement to organic, high-fidelity motion graphics.

Sculpting with the Value Graph

The Value Graph plots a property's literal value against time. The vertical axis represents the value (like pixels for position or a percentage for scale), while the horizontal axis is your timeline. A straight diagonal line shows linear interpolation, a constant rate of change. A curve, however, shows acceleration and deceleration, or what we call easing.

Each keyframe on this graph has Bezier handles that you can manipulate. These handles define the shape of the curve entering and leaving a keyframe. Pulling a handle horizontally stretches the influence of that keyframe over time, creating a slower, more gradual ease. Pulling it vertically can create an 'overshoot' or 'anticipation' effect, where the value temporarily exceeds its target before settling.

Get good with your animation curves in the graph editor to control easing is probably one of the most important technical skills for a 3D animator.

You can also numerically control this by adjusting the 'Influence' percentage. A higher influence percentage on an 'Easy Ease' keyframe means the easing effect is more pronounced and extends further along the motion path segment. This gives you precise, mathematical control over the feel of your motion, allowing you to create everything from a gentle drift to a sudden, snappy stop.

Reading the Rhythm with the Speed Graph

While the Value Graph shows what the value is, the Speed Graph shows how fast it's changing. Here, the vertical axis represents speed (e.g., pixels per second), and zero on this axis means the object is completely still. This view is often more intuitive for tuning the rhythm and pacing of an animation.

A classic 'Easy Ease' motion looks like a simple hill in the Speed Graph. The animation starts at zero speed, accelerates to a peak, and then decelerates back to zero.

Manipulating the handles here directly affects acceleration. Pulling a handle on a keyframe at zero speed extends the duration of the ease, making the start or stop more gradual. Creating a sharp peak results in a quick, snappy movement. You can create bounces by making the speed curve dip below zero (for properties like position) or by creating multiple 'hills' before the speed returns to zero for good.

Solving Jitter with Interpolation

When you animate an object along a curved motion path, you might notice its speed isn't constant. It may speed up or slow down as it moves, even if you didn't intend for it to. This common problem arises from the difference between two types of interpolation: Spatial and Temporal.

By default, After Effects uses Temporal interpolation from your Speed Graph to control speed, while Spatial interpolation (the Bezier handles on the motion path itself in the Composition panel) controls the path's shape. The dots you see along a motion path represent frames. When these dots are bunched up, the object is moving slowly; when they're spread far apart, it's moving fast. The conflict between your path's curves and your speed graph's curves causes that unwanted speed variation or jitter.

So how do you fix it? The classic solution is to use on the intermediate keyframes of your path. Set your first and last keyframes to 'Easy Ease'. Then, select the keyframes in the middle and set them to 'Rove Across Time'.

This tells After Effects to ignore the timing of the intermediate keyframes and instead distribute the object's speed evenly across the path according to the easing on the start and end keyframes. The result is a silky-smooth movement along your custom path, with all the speed control handled cleanly by just two keyframes.
