Precision Control with Masks
You already know that layer masks use black and white to hide and reveal parts of a layer. Now, let's move beyond that simple on/off switch and into the world of precision. This is where non-destructive editing becomes truly powerful. Your primary tool for this is the Properties panel, which appears when you have a mask selected.
One of the simplest yet most useful tools in the Properties panel is the Invert button. With a single click, it swaps all the black areas of your mask to white and all the white to black. This is perfect for when you've masked an object but realize you actually wanted to adjust everything but the object.
Two of the most important sliders in this panel are Density and Feather. Think of Density as a global opacity control for your mask. A density of 100% means your black areas are fully opaque (hiding the layer completely) and white areas are fully transparent (revealing it). Lowering the density reduces the mask's overall effect, making your hidden areas semi-transparent. It’s a quick way to globally dial back the intensity of a mask without repainting it.
Feather, on the other hand, softens the edges of your mask. A feather of 0px gives you a crisp, hard edge. Increasing the feather value blurs the transition between the black and white areas, creating a soft, diffused edge. This is essential for blending adjustments naturally and avoiding harsh outlines.
Gradients and Brushes
To create smooth, gradual transitions, the Gradient Tool is indispensable. Instead of painting on the layer itself, select the mask thumbnail and drag a gradient across your image. A standard black-to-white gradient will create a seamless blend, fading the layer from completely hidden to completely visible. This is the classic technique for replacing a sky or blending one exposure with another.
You can also use radial or reflected gradients for more specialized effects, like creating a soft vignette or a targeted light source effect. The beauty is that it remains a live mask; you can re-draw the gradient or edit it with a brush at any time.
For more artistic control, painting on the mask with a soft brush at a low opacity or flow is key. This allows you to build up your mask's effect slowly. Instead of a binary choice between hidden and visible, you can paint with shades of gray. Painting with 50% gray reveals 50% of the layer. This technique is fundamental for tasks like manual dodging and burning, where you gradually lighten or darken areas to add depth and dimension. By painting on a mask attached to a Curves or Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer, you can sculpt light non-destructively.
Working on the mask thumbnail with varied brush opacities lets you sculpt how an effect is applied, rather than just erasing pixels. Every stroke is reversible.
Clipping Masks vs. Layer Masks
It's crucial to understand the difference between a layer mask and a —they solve different problems.
- A Layer Mask controls the visibility of the layer it is attached to. It acts like a stencil taped directly onto that single layer.
- A Clipping Mask uses the transparency of a base layer to control the visibility of the layer above it. It's like cutting a shape out of paper and then placing a photograph on top, with the photo only being visible through the cutout shape.
To create a clipping mask, place the layer you want to clip (e.g., a texture or an adjustment) directly above your shape or base layer. Then, hold Alt (or Option on Mac) and click on the line between the two layers in the Layers panel. The top layer will become indented with a small arrow, indicating it's clipped to the layer below.
