How We Got Here

Instructional design as a formal field has its roots in World War II. The military needed to train a large number of soldiers quickly and effectively for complex tasks. Researchers were brought in to study how people learn best and to develop systematic training methods. This research laid the groundwork for the field.

Over the decades, instructional design has evolved. It moved from military training films to corporate boardrooms and university classrooms. The rise of computers and the internet revolutionized the field, opening up new ways to deliver and interact with learning materials. But the core principle remains the same: use what we know about how people learn to create better instruction.

Theories of Learning

Instructional designers don't just guess what will work. They draw on established theories of learning to guide their decisions. Understanding these theories helps explain why certain teaching methods are used in certain situations. Let's look at three major ones.

Behaviorism views learning as a change in observable behavior caused by a response to a stimulus. It's about actions. Think of learning multiplication tables with flashcards. You see a card (stimulus), you give the answer (response), and if you're right, you get positive reinforcement. This theory is useful for teaching foundational facts and skills that require memorization.

Cognitivism shifted the focus inward, to the mental processes of the learner. It compares the brain to a computer, focusing on how we process, store, and retrieve information. Flowcharts, diagrams, and mnemonic devices are all cognitive tools. They help organize information so it's easier for our brains to handle. This approach is great for explaining complex systems and relationships.

Constructivism argues that people learn by actively constructing their own understanding and knowledge through experiences and interactions. Learning isn't something that's poured into your head; it's something you build. A constructivist approach might involve a group project to solve a real-world problem or a science experiment where students discover principles for themselves. It emphasizes learning by doing and collaboration.

Each learning theory offers a different lens. A skilled instructional designer knows how to blend them to match the learning goal and the audience.

Instructional Design in Action

So where is instructional design used? The short answer is: everywhere people need to learn.

In K-12 and higher education, instructional designers work with teachers and professors to develop curricula and course materials. They help integrate technology into the classroom and design online courses that are just as effective as their in-person counterparts.

In the corporate world, they create training programs for employees. This could be anything from teaching new software to developing leadership skills. The goal is to improve performance and help the business succeed. They also work in government, healthcare, and non-profits, designing everything from public health campaigns to museum exhibits.
