Instagram Basics
Your Instagram Storefront
Think of your Instagram profile as the digital front door to your business. It's often the first impression a potential customer will have. A well-crafted profile doesn't just look good; it clearly communicates who you are, what you do, and why someone should follow you.
Your Instagram profile is the first impression potential followers get of your brand.
Before you post anything, the first step is setting up this digital storefront. If you already have a personal Instagram account, you can convert it. If not, you can create one from scratch. The key is to make it a Business Profile.
Why a Business Profile?
A business account unlocks a suite of tools that a personal profile doesn't have. You get access to Analytics (or "Insights"), which shows you data on your followers and how your posts are performing. This is crucial for understanding your audience.
Business profiles also let you add contact buttons like "Email" or "Call," and even action buttons like "Book Now" or "Order Food." This makes it much easier for customers to connect with you directly from the app.
To switch, go to your profile, tap the menu in the top right, then go to Settings and privacy > Account type and tools > Switch to professional account. Follow the prompts to connect it to a Facebook Page for your business.
Optimizing Your Profile
Once your business profile is set up, it's time to optimize it. Every element should work together to attract your ideal customer.
Let's break down the key parts:
-
Profile Picture: Use a high-quality logo or a professional headshot. It should be easily recognizable, even as a small circle.
-
Name Field: This is different from your username. Your Name field is searchable. Include keywords that describe your business. For example, instead of just "Glow Skincare," use "Glow Skincare | Natural Beauty."
-
Bio: You have 150 characters to make a big impact. Clearly state what you offer and who you serve. Use line breaks to make it easy to read. A good bio tells people exactly why they should follow you.
-
Link: You only get one clickable link on your profile (in your bio), so make it count. This could be a link to your website, a specific product, or a Linktree-style page with multiple links.
-
Contact Options: Fill out your business email, phone number, and address. This builds trust and gives customers a way to reach you outside of Instagram.
Understanding Content Types
Instagram isn't just about posting photos anymore. The platform offers several ways to share content, each with its own purpose. Using a mix of these formats keeps your feed interesting and engages different segments of your audience.
| Content Type | Best For | Lifespan |
|---|---|---|
| Posts | High-quality, evergreen content. Think of this as your permanent portfolio. | Permanent on your grid |
| Stories | Behind-the-scenes, informal updates, polls, and interactive content. | Disappears after 24 hours |
| Reels | Short, entertaining, and educational videos set to music or audio clips. | Permanent on your Reels tab |
| Live | Real-time broadcasts for Q&As, tutorials, or events. | Can be saved after broadcast |
You may also see references to IGTV. This was Instagram's format for long-form video, but it has since been merged into the main video feed. Now, any video post can be up to 60 minutes long.
Use ALL of Instagram’s features.Instagram allows you to use highlight reels, IGTV, stories and posts on your feed.
Stories that you want to keep for longer than 24 hours can be saved to your Highlights, which appear as circles on your profile just below your bio. This is a great place to showcase important information like FAQs, testimonials, or product categories.

Why is it strategic to include keywords in your profile's "Name" field (separate from your @username)?
