The Humidity Sweet Spot

You can't see it, but your home is full of water vapor. The amount of moisture in the air is called humidity, and finding the right balance is key to a comfortable and healthy living space. We talk about this balance in terms of relative humidity, which measures how much water vapor is in the air compared to the maximum amount it could hold at that temperature.

The ratio, expressed as a percentage, of the amount of water vapor in the air at a specific temperature to the maximum amount that the air could hold at that temperature.

Think of air as a sponge. A warm sponge can soak up more water than a cold one. Relative humidity tells you how “full” that sponge is. A reading of 100% means the sponge is completely saturated and can't hold any more water, which is when you might see condensation or fog.

According to the EPA, indoor humidity levels should be around 30 to 60 percent—this is where an air quality tester will help.

This 30% to 60% range is the sweet spot. Straying too far below or above this can cause problems not just for your comfort, but also for your health and the physical structure of your home.

Too High, Too Low

When humidity levels go outside the ideal range, the consequences can be noticeable. Air that's too dry can feel just as uncomfortable as air that's too damp.

High humidity is particularly troublesome because it creates a welcoming environment for mold, mildew, and dust mites. These unwelcome guests can trigger allergies and respiratory issues. On the flip side, overly dry air can make you more susceptible to colds and infections by drying out your mucous membranes, which are a key part of your body's defense system.

This maritime influence means outdoor humidity is often high, especially during the summer months when the fog is most prevalent.
