What Is Intelligence?
Intelligence is a tricky concept to pin down. It’s more than just being “book smart” or acing a test. At its core, intelligence is our ability to understand the world, think rationally, and use resources effectively when faced with challenges. It involves learning from experience, solving problems, and adapting to new situations.
Intelligence is the ability to learn, reason, problem-solve, and adapt.
While there isn't one single, universally accepted definition, most experts agree it involves a few key mental abilities: abstract thinking, understanding complex ideas, and processing information quickly. It's not a single thing you either have or don't have, but a combination of different cognitive skills.
Two Sides of the Same Coin
Think of your brain like a computer. It has processing power—its ability to run programs and handle new tasks—and it has stored files, which is the information it has saved over time. Intelligence works in a similar way, and psychologists often divide it into two main types: fluid and crystallized intelligence.
This is where fluid intelligence lives: the raw ability to reason, infer, solve, perceive, and abstract — with no prior training required.
Fluid intelligence (Gf) is your ability to think on your feet. It's the capacity to reason and solve novel problems, independent of any knowledge from the past. When you're solving a puzzle you've never seen before, identifying a pattern in a series of abstract shapes, or thinking up a creative solution to an unexpected problem, you're using your fluid intelligence. This type of intelligence is associated with working memory and is considered to peak in early adulthood.
Crystallized intelligence (Gc), on the other hand, is the knowledge you accumulate over a lifetime. It's the sum of your stored information, from vocabulary and historical facts to skills like riding a bike or speaking a language. This intelligence is built upon your fluid intelligence as you learn and experience the world. Unlike fluid intelligence, crystallized intelligence typically continues to grow well into old age.

These two types of intelligence work together. You use your fluid intelligence to process new information, which then becomes part of your crystallized intelligence. For example, learning to code a website for the first time requires fluid intelligence to grasp the new logic and structure. Over time, that knowledge becomes crystallized, and you can build websites without having to re-learn the fundamentals from scratch.
What Shapes Our Intelligence?
So, where does intelligence come from? Is it something we're born with, or is it shaped by our experiences? The answer is both. Intelligence is a complex trait influenced by a mix of genetic and environmental factors.
The nature of intelligence is multifactorial and complicated, with its expression dependent upon the combination of the effects of the environment and the products of a large number of genes.
Genetics plays a significant role. Studies of twins, families, and adopted children show that a substantial portion of the variation in intelligence scores can be attributed to genetic differences. However, there's no single "intelligence gene." Instead, it's the result of complex interactions among many different genes.
Environment is just as crucial. The world we grow up and live in shapes our cognitive abilities profoundly. Factors like:
- Education: Access to quality schooling and learning opportunities.
- Nutrition: A healthy diet, especially during childhood development.
- Socioeconomic Status: Resources, home environment, and exposure to stimulating experiences.
- Lifestyle: Things like regular physical exercise, getting enough sleep, and managing stress all have an impact on cognitive function.
These factors don't operate in isolation. Your genes might give you a certain potential, but your environment and your choices determine how that potential is expressed. It's a continuous interplay between nature and nurture.
Understanding these foundations is the first step. By recognizing that intelligence is multifaceted and influenced by both our biology and our habits, we can better appreciate how our minds work.
