What Happens in the Lab?

When you visit a doctor, they often need more information than what they can see or hear. They might take a small sample of blood, urine, or tissue. But what happens next? These samples are sent to a lab for tests known as in vitro diagnostics, or IVDs.

A process performed or taking place in a test tube, culture dish, or elsewhere outside a living organism.

The term comes from Latin, meaning "in the glass." It describes any medical procedure or test that's done outside of a living body, in a controlled environment like a petri dish or test tube. This is the opposite of an in vivo procedure, which means "within the living."

Think of it this way: a blood pressure reading taken with a cuff on your arm is an in vivo measurement. But when a small vial of your blood is analyzed by a machine to check your cholesterol levels, that's in vitro diagnostics at work.
