It has been updated several times since, with the latest version, IATF 16949:2016, replacing the previous ISO technical specification.
Building on ISO 9001
IATF 16949 isn't a standalone quality management standard. Instead, it's designed to be used with ISO 9001, the world's most recognized standard for quality management systems. Think of ISO 9001 as the foundation, providing the core principles and structure for a solid QMS. IATF 16949 then builds on that foundation with specific, more stringent requirements tailored to the unique demands of the automotive sector.
An organization seeking IATF 16949 certification must first fully comply with ISO 9001. The IATF standard then adds crucial elements like risk management for product development, contingency planning for supply disruptions, and requirements for managing software embedded in automotive parts.
Automotive PCBs must comply with rigorous quality and reliability standards such as ISO 26262 (functional safety) and IATF 16949 (automotive quality management).
