Introduction to Hylomorphism
The Unity of Matter and Form
How do you get a “thing” from just “stuff”? Think about a block of marble. It's just a rock. But in the hands of a sculptor, it can become a statue of a person. The marble is the “stuff,” and the shape of the person is what makes it a statue. Aristotle, an ancient Greek philosopher, had a name for this idea: hylomorphism.
Hylomorphism is the theory that every physical object is a combination of two principles: matter and form. You can't have one without the other. The matter is the potential of a thing, while the form is what makes it an actual, specific thing.

Let's stick with the statue example. The bronze is the matter, or hulê. It has the potential to become many things: a shield, a bell, or a statue. The form, or morphê, is the specific shape the artist gives it. When the form of a statue is imposed on the matter of the bronze, you get a bronze statue. Neither the raw bronze alone nor the abstract shape alone is a statue. They must be combined.
Beyond Simple Shapes
For Aristotle, form wasn't just about physical shape. It was the organizing principle of a thing—its structure, function, and very essence. This becomes clearer when we look at living organisms.
Consider an acorn and an oak tree. The matter of the acorn is its physical material. Its form is its “acorn-ness,” which includes the potential to become an oak tree. When it grows, it doesn't just get bigger. It organizes matter—water, soil, carbon dioxide—into a specific structure: a trunk, branches, leaves, and roots. This organizing principle is the form of the oak tree. Aristotle would call this form its “soul” (though not in a religious sense). It’s what makes the tree a living, functioning oak, rather than just a pile of wood and leaves.
For living things, form is not just a shape, but the blueprint for what it is and what it does.
This means that matter and form are relative. The wood of an oak tree is matter relative to the form of the tree. But that same wood can be the matter for a table. In that case, the wood is the matter, and its new shape and function are the form of the table. A thing’s matter is what it's made of; its form is what it's made into.

Hylomorphism provided Aristotle a powerful way to explain change. When something changes, it's not that the old thing is destroyed and a new one appears. Instead, the underlying matter persists, but it takes on a new form. A log (matter) loses its form as a log and takes on the form of ash and smoke when it burns. The underlying stuff is still there, just rearranged into a new actuality.
By seeing everything as a composite of potentiality and actuality, Aristotle created a framework that explains how things can be both stable and capable of change.
