Introduction to Human Design
What Is Human Design?
Human Design is a system that maps your unique energetic makeup. Think of it as a detailed user manual for your life, showing how you're built to navigate the world, make decisions, and interact with others. It's not about putting you in a box; it's about showing you the unique shape of your own energy.
Human design uses two types of science: The ancient observational systems of astrology, the I’CHing, Hindu-Brahmin Chakra system, and the Kabbalist Tree of Life along with Quantum Mechanics, Astronomy, Genetics, and Biochemistry.
This synthesis of old and new systems began in 1987 with a man named Ra Uru Hu, who reported receiving the information during a mystical experience. The system he transcribed creates a personalized chart based on your birth date, time, and place. This chart, called a BodyGraph, is the visual key to understanding your design.
Your Personal Blueprint
The BodyGraph is a map of your energy centers and the pathways between them. It looks a bit like a circuit board, showing where energy is consistent and reliable for you, and where you're more open and receptive to the world around you. Let's break down the main components.
The Nine Centers
The BodyGraph has nine shapes, called Centers. Each one governs a specific aspect of our human experience, like pressure, awareness, identity, or expression. Think of them as energy hubs within your body.
If a center is colored in on your chart, it's considered defined. This means you have a consistent, reliable way of experiencing that energy. It's a fixed part of who you are. If a center is white, it's undefined or open. This is where you are receptive to the energy of others and the world around you. You take in and amplify the energy of that center from other people.

Gates and Channels
Sticking out from each Center are small numbers from 1 to 64. These are the Gates. Each gate represents a specific trait or potential energy.
When two opposite gates in two different centers are activated in a chart, they form a Channel. This creates a defined, consistent flow of energy between those two centers, coloring them in. A channel represents a specific strength or life theme that is always active within you. The BodyGraph has 36 channels in total, each creating a unique energetic function.
Think of it this way: The Centers are cities, the Gates are the city gates, and the Channels are the highways connecting them. Your defined channels are the highways you have constant access to.
Using Your Design
The main purpose of Human Design is to help you live more authentically. By understanding your chart, you can start to see why you operate the way you do. It provides a practical framework for making decisions that are in alignment with your true nature, rather than what you've been conditioned to believe you should do.
It’s a tool for de-conditioning, helping you shed the layers of outside influence and connect with your inner guidance. This self-awareness can improve your relationships, your career, and your overall sense of well-being by helping you work with your energy, not against it.
