What Is Psychology?
Psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behavior. Let's break that down. "Behavior" is everything we can see someone do, from walking and talking to laughing and crying. It's the outward expression of what's happening inside.
The "mind" is the tricky part. It refers to all our internal, private experiences. This includes thoughts, memories, emotions, and dreams. You can't directly see someone's thoughts, but they drive almost all of their behaviors. Psychology aims to understand both the visible actions and the invisible processes that power them.
Essentially, psychologists want to know what makes people tick. Why do we think, feel, and act the way we do?
Different Lenses on the Mind
There isn't just one single way to explain why people do what they do. Over time, psychologists have developed several major perspectives, or viewpoints, for understanding human behavior. Think of them like different pairs of glasses. Each pair brings certain aspects of a situation into focus while leaving others in the background.
The Behavioral Perspective This view focuses entirely on observable behavior. Behaviorists believe that we learn our actions through interaction with the environment. They argue that our behavior is shaped by rewards and punishments. If an action leads to a good outcome, we're more likely to do it again. If it leads to a bad one, we're less likely.
For example, a child learns to say "please" because they get a cookie (a reward) when they do. The focus is on the action (saying "please") and its consequence (the cookie), not the child's inner thoughts about politeness.
The Cognitive Perspective This perspective shifts the focus inward, looking at the mental processes that behavioral psychology tends to ignore. Cognitive psychologists are interested in how we think, remember, solve problems, and perceive the world. They often compare the mind to a computer, analyzing how we take in information, process it, and use it to guide our actions.
Imagine you're trying to find your keys. A cognitive psychologist would be interested in your mental strategy: how you mentally retrace your steps, visualize where you last saw them, and eliminate places you've already checked.
The Psychodynamic Perspective Pioneered by Sigmund Freud, this perspective emphasizes the influence of the unconscious mind on our behavior. It suggests that our actions and feelings are driven by desires and memories that are hidden from our awareness, often stemming from our early childhood experiences. According to this view, unresolved conflicts from our past can shape our personality and actions in the present.
Someone who is obsessively organized might, from a psychodynamic view, be acting out an unconscious need for control that developed during a chaotic childhood.

How Psychologists Know What They Know
Psychology isn't just about ideas; it's a science. That means psychologists use systematic methods to study behavior and the mind. They don't just guess, they gather data. There are a few basic ways they do this.
One common method is the experiment. In an experiment, a researcher manipulates one variable to see if it has an effect on another. For example, a researcher might give one group of people a new memory-enhancing drink and another group a placebo (a fake drink). Then, they would test both groups' memory. If the group that got the real drink performs better, the researcher might conclude the drink improves memory. This method is great for determining cause and effect.
Another method is the correlational study. This involves measuring two variables to see if they are related. For instance, a psychologist might measure how many hours students sleep and what their grades are. They might find that students who sleep more tend to have higher grades. This shows a relationship, or correlation, but it doesn't prove that more sleep causes higher grades. Maybe students who are more organized both sleep more and get better grades.
Correlation does not equal causation. Just because two things happen together doesn't mean one causes the other.
Finally, there's observation. Sometimes, the best way to understand behavior is simply to watch it happen in a natural setting. A developmental psychologist might observe how children play on a playground to understand social development. This provides a realistic look at behavior as it actually occurs.
These different perspectives and research methods are the basic tools psychologists use to build our understanding of the human experience.
