Introduction to Permaculture

What is Permaculture?

Permaculture is a way of designing human systems that mimic the patterns found in nature. The term, a blend of “permanent agriculture” and “permanent culture,” was coined by Australians Bill Mollison and David Holmgren in the 1970s. They saw how industrial agriculture was damaging the environment and wanted to find a better way.

Their solution was to create a design philosophy that works with nature, not against it. It's about building sustainable, self-sufficient human settlements that are also healthy ecosystems. While it's often associated with gardening, permaculture applies to everything from how we build our homes to how we structure our communities.

Permaculture is a holistic approach to designing sustainable systems that mimic the patterns and relationships found in nature.

At its heart, permaculture is guided by a simple set of ethical principles. These ethics are the foundation for every decision made in a permaculture system.

The Three Ethics

Permaculture rests on three core ethics that provide a moral compass for its design principles. They are simple, universal, and interconnected.

1. Earth Care This ethic recognizes that the Earth is the source of all life and that we have a responsibility to care for it. It means protecting soil, forests, and water. It involves choosing practices that regenerate ecosystems rather than degrade them, ensuring that our planet remains healthy for future generations.

2. People Care This principle focuses on looking after ourselves, our families, and our communities. It's about ensuring everyone has access to the resources they need to live a healthy and secure life. This includes food, shelter, education, and meaningful work.

3. Fair Share (or Return of Surplus) This ethic addresses the need to share resources equitably. It acknowledges that there are limits to how much we can consume. When our systems produce a surplus—whether it's extra food, energy, or money—we should reinvest it back into the first two ethics. This could mean composting extra food to enrich the soil (Earth Care) or donating produce to a neighbor (People Care).

The Twelve Principles

If the ethics are the 'why,' the twelve design principles are the 'how.' They are thinking tools that help us apply the ethics to our designs. These principles, developed by David Holmgren, guide us in creating resilient and efficient systems.

1. Observe and Interact: Spend time watching and learning from your environment before you make changes. Good design comes from careful observation, not hasty action.

2. Catch and Store Energy: Identify, collect, and store resources when they are abundant. This could be rainwater in a tank, sunlight in solar panels, or fertility in a compost pile.

3. Obtain a Yield: Make sure you're getting a useful result for your work. A system should produce something of value, whether it's food, energy, or personal well-being.

The next set of principles helps us create systems that are more efficient and self-sufficient.

4. Apply Self-Regulation and Accept Feedback: Design systems that can largely maintain themselves. Pay attention to the results of your actions and be willing to change course when something isn't working.

5. Use and Value Renewable Resources and Services: Rely on the gifts of nature: sun, wind, rain, and biomass. These resources are sustainable and reduce our dependence on non-renewable inputs.

6. Produce No Waste: Find a use for every output. In nature, one organism's waste is another's resource. A fallen leaf becomes soil. This principle encourages us to see everything as a potential resource.

The final principles focus on seeing the bigger picture and using creativity to solve problems.

7. Design from Patterns to Details: First, observe the broad patterns in nature and society. Then, design the details to fit within those larger patterns. Think of it as creating the blueprint before choosing the paint colors.

8. Integrate Rather Than Segregate: Position elements so they work together. For example, placing a chicken coop near a garden allows the chickens to eat pests and their manure to fertilize the soil.

9. Use Small and Slow Solutions: Small, slow-growing systems are easier to maintain and more resilient than large, fast ones. Start small, learn from experience, and expand gradually.

10. Use and Value Diversity: Diverse systems are more stable. A garden with many different types of plants is less vulnerable to pests than a field of a single crop.

11. Use Edges and Value the Marginal: The most productive areas in an ecosystem are often the edges where two different environments meet, like the shoreline of a pond. We can create and use these edges in our designs to increase productivity.

12. Creatively Use and Respond to Change: Change is inevitable. We can either see it as a threat or an opportunity. This principle encourages us to be flexible and adapt, turning challenges into positive outcomes.

These ethics and principles form the toolkit of permaculture. They provide a framework for thinking, designing, and living in a way that is sustainable, ethical, and deeply connected to the natural world.
