Your Heart's Hidden Rhythm
Your heart doesn't beat like a metronome. If you measure the exact time between each heartbeat, you'll find that it's not perfectly regular. There are tiny, millisecond-level variations in the length of each interval. This natural fluctuation is called Heart Rate Variability, or HRV.
Heart Rate Variability (HRV) is the measure of the variation in time between consecutive heartbeats.
It might sound strange, but this inconsistency is a sign of a healthy, adaptable body. A heart that can subtly change its rhythm from moment to moment is a heart that's ready to respond to whatever life throws at it. A high HRV is generally a good thing, indicating a resilient and well-rested system. The Nervous System's Balancing Act

The ANS has two main branches that work in opposition, like a gas pedal and a brake for your body.

Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS): This is your "rest-and-digest" system. It's the brake. The PNS is active when you're relaxed, slowing your heart rate and helping your body recover.
HRV is the direct result of these two systems sending competing signals to your heart. This constant push and pull creates the variability in your heart rhythm.
When your body is in a state of balance, both systems are active, and your heart rate responds accordingly. This dynamic interplay results in high HRV. But if you're constantly stressed, the sympathetic system (the gas pedal) stays floored, overpowering the parasympathetic system. Your heart beats faster and more regularly, with less variability between beats, leading to a lower HRV.
Generally, a higher HRV indicates a better balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches of the autonomic nervous system.
