Understanding Exponents
A Shortcut for Multiplication
Imagine you need to multiply a number by itself over and over again. Writing out is a bit tedious. Mathematicians love shortcuts, so they came up with a cleaner way to write this: exponents.
This simple expression means the exact same thing as the longer multiplication problem. It's made of two parts: the base and the exponent.

A number that indicates how many times to multiply the base by itself. It's also known as a power.
So, $4^5$ is just a shorthand for multiplying the base (4) by itself five times. We often read this as "four to the fifth power" or "four to the power of five."
There are a couple of special names you'll hear often. An exponent of 2 is called "squared," and an exponent of 3 is called "cubed."

- $2^3$ is "two cubed."
Putting Exponents to Work
To find the value of an expression with an exponent, you just do the multiplication. This is called "evaluating" the expression. Let's evaluate $2^3$.
