International Ambitions

Filing a patent in every single country is impractical. That's where the (PCT) comes in. It's a unified procedure for filing a single international patent application to seek protection in over 150 countries simultaneously. The PCT is the primary tool for inventors with global ambitions, and the usage data reveals a lot about which countries' innovators are thinking internationally.

Since 2019, China has been the top user of the PCT system, displacing the United States from a spot it had held for decades. This shift is significant. It shows that Chinese companies are not just inventing at a high volume but are also increasingly confident in their innovations' value on the global stage. Following China and the US are Japan, the Republic of Korea, and Germany, mirroring the overall filing trends.

The Shift to Asia

The rise of China is part of a larger, decades-long trend: the eastward shift of the world's innovation hub. Currently, offices in Asia receive well over two-thirds of all patent applications filed worldwide. This is a dramatic reversal from the 20th century, when Europe and North America were the undisputed centres of technological development.

This geographic shift isn't just about one country's rise. It reflects a fundamental realignment of the global economy and the increasing technological prowess of multiple Asian nations.

To understand this trend better, it helps to distinguish between two types of applications. are applications filed by someone within their home country, like a Japanese company filing with the Japan Patent Office. Non-resident filings are applications made by a foreigner, like a German carmaker filing for a patent in the United States. A high number of resident filings indicates a vibrant domestic innovation ecosystem. A high number of non-resident filings shows that a country is a valuable market that foreign innovators want to protect their inventions in.

China's massive numbers, for example, are driven heavily by resident filings, reflecting a national policy to boost domestic innovation. The United States, on the other hand, has a more balanced split and remains the top destination for non-resident filers, underscoring the perceived value of the American market. This dynamic shows that while the locus of invention has shifted, the key commercial markets have remained more stable.
