Before you can even think about applying to a German university, you need to pass the first filter: ensuring your educational qualifications are recognized in Germany. The primary tool for this is the database, a system maintained by the German government to evaluate foreign credentials. Think of it as the official gatekeeper. If your school-leaving certificate isn't from a board recognized here, your application will likely stop before it even starts.
The Anabin website (anabin.kmk.org) is entirely in German, which can be intimidating. Don't worry, we'll walk through it. Your first task is to verify the status of the institution that issued your certificate. On the homepage, look for a section on the left-hand navigation bar. You need to click on "Institutionen" (Institutions).
After clicking "Institutionen," you'll see a search mask. To check on the Board of Open Schooling and Examination (), you first need to select the country. Click the "Suchen" (Search) tab, find the dropdown menu for "Länderauswahl," and choose "Indien" (India). Once you've selected the country, you can search for institutions within it. You can try searching by the institution's name ("BOSSE") or by the city where it is based (Gangtok).
Interpreting the H Status
When you search for an institution, Anabin assigns it a status symbol. This is the most important piece of information. There are three possibilities:

Because BOSSE is a relatively new board, established in 2020, it's possible it may not be listed at all, or it might have an H+/- status. If it has H+, you're in a good position. If it has H- or isn't listed, your path becomes much more difficult.
It's important not to confuse the "Institutionen" section with "Hochschulabschlüsse" (Higher Education Degrees). The latter is used for verifying specific university degrees, like a Bachelor of Arts. For your high school marksheet, you must start by verifying the issuing institution (the board). If the board itself isn't recognized, the qualification it grants won't be either.
This initial check on Anabin is a simple but critical first step. It determines whether your marksheet is even eligible for consideration by German universities and the Academic Evaluation Centre (APS). A positive result here is your green light to proceed.
