German for Young Beginners
Greetings and Introductions
Saying Hello
The first word you learn in a new language is often "hello." In German, the most common way to say hello is very simple. It's almost like English!
Hello
You can use Hallo anytime you meet someone, whether it's a friend, a teacher, or a family member. It's a friendly, all-purpose greeting.
Germans also have greetings for different times of the day, just like we say "good morning" or "good evening."
| German Phrase | English Meaning |
|---|---|
| Guten Morgen | Good morning |
| Guten Tag | Good day |
| Guten Abend | Good evening |
You would say Guten Morgen when you wake up or arrive at school in the morning. Guten Tag is a polite way to greet people during the daytime, and Guten Abend is for the evening.
What's Your Name?
After saying hello, the next step is to introduce yourself. To say what your name is, you use the phrase Ich heiße...
My name is...
So, if your name is Alex, you would say, "Ich heiße Alex." It's that easy! Just add your name to the end of the phrase.
Now, what if you want to ask someone else for their name? You can ask:
Wie heißt du?
This means, "What is your name?" Let's see how a short conversation would look.
# A simple conversation in German
Person 1: Hallo! Wie heißt du?
(Hello! What is your name?)
Person 2: Guten Tag! Ich heiße Maria.
(Good day! My name is Maria.)
Saying Goodbye
Just as there are different ways to say hello, there are a few ways to say goodbye. The most common, friendly way to say bye is Tschüss.
Bye
It sounds a bit like the word "juice" but with a "ch" sound at the beginning. You can say it to friends and family.
A more formal way to say goodbye is Auf Wiedersehen. It literally means "until we see again."
Auf Wiedersehen
You might hear this in shops or from people you don't know well. Both Tschüss and Auf Wiedersehen are great ways to end a conversation.
Now, let's practice what you've learned.
What is the most common, all-purpose way to say "hello" in German?
If you are meeting someone in the evening, which greeting should you use?
Great work! You've just taken your first step into speaking German. You can now greet people, introduce yourself, and say goodbye.
