What Is Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is about building computers or machines that can perform tasks that normally require human intelligence. This includes abilities like learning from experience, understanding language, recognizing objects, solving problems, and making decisions.

The core goal of AI is to create systems that can operate intelligently and independently.

Think about how you learn. You observe, you process information, and you adapt your behavior. AI systems are designed to do something similar. They take in data, identify patterns, and adjust their actions to achieve a specific goal. This could be anything from recommending a movie you might like to helping doctors diagnose diseases more accurately.

The Two Main Types of AI

Not all AI is the same. The field is broadly divided into two main types based on their capabilities: Narrow AI and General AI. Understanding the difference is key to seeing where AI is today and where it might be headed.

First, we have Artificial Narrow Intelligence (ANI), sometimes called Weak AI. This is the only type of AI we have successfully created so far. ANI is designed and trained for a specific task. It's incredibly good at what it does, but it operates within a limited, pre-defined range. A chess program can beat the world champion, but it can't order you a pizza or tell you a joke.

Your spam filter, the recommendation engine on a streaming service, and voice assistants on your phone are all examples of ANI. They are masters of their single domain.

All the AI you interact with in your daily life is Narrow AI. It's highly specialized and focused on one job.

The other type is Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), or Strong AI. This is the kind of AI you often see in movies. AGI would have the ability to understand, learn, and apply knowledge across a wide range of tasks, essentially possessing the same kind of flexible, general intelligence as a human being. An AGI could switch from composing music to solving complex scientific problems without needing to be retrained.

Currently, AGI remains a theoretical concept. Building a system with such broad cognitive abilities is a massive challenge that researchers are still working toward.
