Importing 3D Models
The Data Panel
Think of the Data Panel as your project command center in Fusion 360. It’s where all your designs, folders, and project files live, neatly organized in the cloud. To open it, just click the grid icon in the top-left corner of the screen.
Inside, you'll see a list of your projects. Projects are like top-level folders that help you organize your work. You can create new projects for different clients, products, or even just for practice. Clicking on a project reveals the files and folders within it, just like a file explorer on your computer.
Uploading Your Models
Often, you'll start a project with a 3D model that someone else created, perhaps in a different software. Fusion 360 makes it easy to bring these external files into your workspace.
First, navigate to the project and folder where you want to store the new file. Once you're there, click the Upload button. A dialog box will appear, allowing you to drag and drop files or select them from your computer. After you choose your files and click Upload, Fusion 360 gets to work.
Your files are sent to the cloud, where they are translated into a format that Fusion 360 can understand. You can watch the progress in the Job Status window. Once it's done, the file will appear in your Data Panel, ready to use.
Fusion 360 supports many file types, but a few are especially common when working with 3D models from other CAD programs.

Choosing the right format is key. If you plan to modify the model, a STEP file is your best bet because it preserves the original geometry as solid bodies. An STL file, on the other hand, is like a snapshot of the model's surface—great for printing, but not for design changes.
Using Imported Components
Once your model is uploaded and translated, it exists as its own separate design file in the Data Panel. To use it in another design, you need to insert it.
Open the design you want to add the component to. Then, find the imported file in the Data Panel, right-click it, and choose Insert into Current Design. The model will appear in your workspace as a component.
This inserted component is linked to its original file in the Data Panel. If you update the original file, Fusion 360 will notify you that the linked component in your assembly is out of date, allowing you to update it with a single click. This helps keep your projects organized and current.
You can manage the imported component like any other in your design. You can move it, create joints to position it relative to other parts, and use it as a reference for building new geometry. This simple import process is the foundation for building complex assemblies from both new and existing parts.
