Introduction to Fusion 360

Welcome to Fusion 360

Autodesk Fusion 360 is a powerful, cloud-based tool that brings together design, engineering, and manufacturing into a single platform. Think of it as a digital workshop where you can create everything from simple brackets to complex mechanical assemblies. It combines several disciplines into one package: Computer-Aided Design (CAD), Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM), and Computer-Aided Engineering (CAE).

Fusion 360 is a cloud-based collaborative 3D design, computer-aided manufacturing, and engineering design platform created by Autodesk for design, manufacturing, electronics, and engineering.

Before you can build anything, you need to know your way around the workspace. Let's get familiar with the user interface.

Finding Your Way Around

When you first open Fusion 360, the interface might seem busy, but it's organized logically. The main sections you'll interact with are the Toolbar, Browser, Canvas, ViewCube, and Timeline.

  • Toolbar: At the top of the screen, this ribbon contains all your tools for sketching, creating, and modifying your design. It changes depending on which workspace you're in (e.g., Design, Render, Manufacture).
  • Browser: On the left, this is a hierarchical list of every object in your project. It includes sketches, bodies, components, and construction planes. Keeping the Browser organized is key to managing complex designs.
  • Canvas: This is the large, central area where you'll do all your design work. It's your digital workbench.
  • ViewCube: In the upper-right corner, this cube lets you easily change your perspective. Click on its faces (Top, Front, Right) or corners to orbit around your model.

Finally, there's the Timeline at the very bottom. This is one of Fusion 360's most powerful features. It records every operation you perform—from sketches to extrusions—in chronological order. This is called parametric modeling. It means you can go back and edit any step in your design's history, and all subsequent steps will update automatically. Made a hole too small early on? Just edit the original sketch in the timeline, and the 3D model will rebuild itself with the new dimension.

The timeline is one of the most important tools in Fusion 360.

From 2D Sketch to 3D Form

Every 3D model in Fusion 360 starts as a 2D sketch. A sketch is a flat drawing that defines the profile or shape of your object. You create sketches on a plane or a flat face of an existing object.

To start, you'll select 'Create Sketch' from the toolbar and pick a plane to draw on, usually one of the default XY, XZ, or YZ origin planes. Once in Sketch Mode, you have access to a variety of drawing tools:

After drawing the basic shapes, you use Dimensions and Constraints to define them precisely. A dimension sets a specific length, diameter, or angle. A constraint creates a geometric rule, like making two lines parallel or forcing a line to be perfectly horizontal. A fully defined sketch, where all geometry is black, is stable and predictable when you turn it into a 3D shape.

Think of a sketch as the blueprint for your 3D model. A well-defined blueprint leads to a solid final product.

Bringing Your Design to Life

Once you have a closed 2D profile in a sketch, you can transform it into a 3D object, or 'body'. The most fundamental tool for this is Extrude. It takes your 2D shape and pulls it into the third dimension, giving it thickness.

Imagine you sketched a circle. Using the Extrude tool, you can pull that circle up to create a cylinder. If you sketched a rectangle, you could extrude it to form a block. Extrusion is the primary way you'll create solid material.

After creating a base body, you can modify it or add more features. Some common modifying tools include:

  • Fillet: This tool rounds sharp edges or corners. It's useful for creating smoother, stronger, and more aesthetically pleasing parts.
  • Chamfer: Similar to Fillet, but it creates a beveled or angled edge instead of a rounded one.
  • Hole: As the name suggests, this tool creates precise holes. You can specify the diameter, depth, and even the type of hole, such as one with threads for a screw.
  • Shell: This command hollows out a solid body, leaving a thin wall of a specified thickness. It's perfect for creating containers or lightweight parts.

These basic creation and modification tools are the building blocks of almost any model you'll create in Fusion 360. By starting with a sketch, extruding it into a body, and then refining it with other tools, you can design a huge variety of objects.
