The Building Blocks of Space
Everything in geometry starts with a simple, yet powerful idea: the point. A point isn't a thing you can hold; it's just a location. Think of it as the tiniest pinprick on a map, so small it has no size, no width, and no depth. It just marks a spot.

A precise location or position in space. It has no dimensions (no length, width, or height).
Now, imagine stringing an infinite number of these points together in a perfectly straight path. What you get is a line. A line is a straight path that goes on forever in both directions. It has length, but no width or thickness.
If we go one step further, we can imagine an infinite collection of lines laid side-by-side on a perfectly flat surface. This gives us a plane. A plane is like a tabletop or a sheet of paper that extends endlessly in all directions. It has length and width, but no thickness. Most of the geometry we'll explore happens on a plane.
When Lines Meet
Things get interesting when lines, or parts of lines, interact. An angle is formed when two rays share a common endpoint. A ray is like a snippet of a line; it has a starting point but continues infinitely in one direction.
The common endpoint where the two rays meet is called the vertex. The rays are often called the sides or arms of the angle.
We measure angles in units called degrees, symbolized by °. Think of a full circle as being 360°. The size of an angle tells us how much one ray has opened up relative to the other. Based on their size, we can classify angles into a few key types.
Classifying Angles
An acute angle is any angle that measures less than 90°. These are the "sharp" or "pointy" angles.
Think acute, think "a cute little angle."
A right angle measures exactly 90°. This is the corner of a square or a book. Right angles are everywhere in the world around us. We use a special square symbol to show that an angle is a right angle, so we don't even have to write "90°".
An obtuse angle is an angle that is greater than 90° but less than 180°. These angles are "wider" than right angles.
An obtuse angle opens wide, like a reclining chair.
Finally, a straight angle measures exactly 180°. It looks just like a straight line. It's as if you took an angle and opened it up completely flat.
