Introduction to Architecture

More Than Just Buildings

Architecture is the art and science of designing and creating buildings and other physical structures. But it's much more than bricks and mortar. It's about shaping the spaces where we live, work, and interact. Every building you enter, from your home to your local library, is a product of architectural thought.

These spaces don't just protect us from the elements. They influence our moods, guide our movements, and reflect our values as a society. Architecture is a language that tells the story of who we are, what we believe in, and how we see the world.

Whenever someone talks about Architecture people quickly asume that the person is talking about buildings and construction and cement and concrete but it’s not about constructing buildings, it’s the art form that shapes the surrounding around us and helps to make the world a better place and influence our everyday lives.

The Core Elements

To understand architecture, we need to look at its fundamental building blocks. Architects work with three main elements: form, function, and space. Think of these as the ingredients they combine to create a finished structure.

Form

The shape, structure, and overall visual appearance of a building. It's what a building looks like from the outside and how its different parts are arranged.

Form is the physical reality of a building. It's the first thing we notice. An architect chooses specific shapes, materials, and colours to create a desired effect. A tall, glass skyscraper has a very different form from a low, sprawling bungalow made of wood and stone. The arrangement of these visual elements gives a building its unique character.

A library's function is to provide a quiet space for reading and study, so its design will feature large reading rooms and bookshelves. A train station, on the other hand, is designed for movement and flow, with wide corridors and clear signage.

Function is the purpose of the building. Why was it built? What activities will happen inside it? The function dictates many of the architect's decisions. The layout of a hospital must be efficient for doctors and safe for patients. The design of a school needs to include classrooms, a playground, and a cafeteria. A building that works well is one where the form successfully serves its function.

This relationship is famously summed up in the phrase "form follows function." While not a strict rule, it highlights the idea that a design should grow from its purpose.

Finally, there is space. Architects don't just design solid objects; they shape the voids. Space is the area in, around, and between structures. It's the volume that we move through and experience. An architect might create a grand, open atrium to inspire a sense of awe, or a cosy, enclosed nook to provide a feeling of comfort and security.

A Mirror to Society

Buildings are never created in a vacuum. They are deeply connected to the culture and environment around them. The climate of a region, for instance, has a huge impact on design. In hot climates, you might see buildings with thick walls, small windows, and courtyards to keep the interior cool. In colder regions, designs often focus on maximising sunlight and retaining heat.

Culture also leaves its mark. The design of a traditional Japanese house, with its sliding screens and connection to nature, reflects cultural values of simplicity and harmony. A grand European cathedral, with its soaring vaults and stained-glass windows, was designed to express religious devotion and power. Available technology and materials also shape what's possible, from ancient stone temples to modern steel-and-glass towers.

By looking at the architecture of a place, we can learn a great deal about the people who built it, the challenges they faced, and the ideas they held dear. Every structure is a piece of a larger story.
