Routing for a Pro Sound
You already know your way around the FL Studio Mobile mixer for basic level balancing. Now, it's time to use it like a pro. The key isn't just managing volume, but directing your audio signals with purpose. This is where you create clarity, depth, and punch.
We'll move beyond treating each channel as an isolated island. Instead, we will build an interconnected system using effect tracks (AUX) and buses. This architectural approach is fundamental to achieving a polished, studio-quality mix.
Centralise Your Effects
Putting a separate reverb or delay plugin on every single track is a quick way to drain your CPU and create a sonically messy mix. A better method is to use dedicated effect tracks, often called AUX tracks or sends. You create one reverb track and 'send' a portion of the signal from multiple instruments to it.
To do this, tap the '+' on the mixer to add a new 'Effect Track'. It's good practice to rename it immediately to something descriptive, like 'Hall Reverb' or 'Ping Pong Delay'. Now, on any instrument channel, instead of adding a reverb directly, you'll use the FX Send knob to route a part of that channel's audio to your new effect track. This ensures multiple instruments share the same sense of space, making your mix feel cohesive, not like a collection of disconnected sounds.
When using sends, always set the mix knob on the effect plugin itself to 100% wet. You control the dry/wet balance using the send knob on the original channel and the volume fader on the AUX track. This gives you independent control over the level of the original sound and the level of the effect.
Your send knob is the tap; the AUX fader is the bucket's size. Manage both for the perfect effects level.
Parallel Processing and Buses
Beyond effects, routing lets you process multiple tracks together. This is where come in. A bus is simply a track you route other tracks to before they hit the main output. Think of it like a train station where passengers from different lines (your tracks) gather before heading to the final destination (the master output).
This is essential for sub-grouping. For example, you can send all your drum tracks—kick, snare, hi-hats—to a single 'Drum Bus'. By placing a compressor and EQ on this one bus track, you can process the entire drum kit as a single, cohesive instrument. This helps 'glue' the elements together, making them sound powerful and unified.
A powerful application of this is —blending a heavily processed signal with the original, dry signal. A classic example is New York Compression. To set this up, create an AUX track named 'Drum Crush'. Send your Drum Bus signal to this new track.
On the 'Drum Crush' track, add a compressor and set it to extreme settings: a very high ratio (10:1 or higher), a fast attack, and a fast release. The goal is to heavily 'crush' the signal. This will sound aggressive and possibly distorted on its own.
Now, slowly raise the fader of the 'Drum Crush' track, blending its heavily compressed signal back in with your main Drum Bus. You'll notice the drums sound thicker and more powerful, but because the original, uncompressed signal is still present, they don't lose their punchy transients. You get the weight of the compression without sacrificing the dynamics.
Mastering these routing techniques transforms the mixer from a simple set of volume faders into a powerful creative tool. You can build complex, efficient, and professional-sounding mixes right inside FL Studio Mobile.
